Christian Formation at Saint John's
At Saint John's we believe that the spiritual and theological development of the Christian is a vital component of our mission.
Christians need right spiritual tools and be shown how to use right theological methods so they may face the questions and conversations of a secular world.
With this in mind we make a great effort to feed the people of God with godly education and spiritual formation aimed at every stage of life. The following outlines our current programs. Please join us!
Children's Formation. The PreK - 5 grade program is designed to give each child a solid foundation in Anglican Christianity. The three year series covers Old & New Testament, What We Do, and What We Believe. In the Bible section, children learn about important figures and events from the Old and New Testaments. In the What We Do section children learn about Christian and Anglican practices like worship, liturgical seasons, prayer, sacraments, etc. In the What We Believe section children learn about basic creedal and theological concepts. By the time a child has grown through the whole program they will have received the material three times on different developmental levels. The Jr. and Sr. High program is designed to give children the opportunity to study the Bible and other Christian concepts in more depth. With varying studies offered these students get to learn about Bible exegesis and the responsibility of personal spiritual discipline. Along with the wonderful programming provided in our EYC Youth group, our young people will get a firm foundation in the basic elements of a Christian Rule of Life.
First Communion Instruction. First Communion Instruction is offered during Lent for children in the first grade and up. This 6 weeks series helps the children understand what is taking place during the Mass, what the purpose of the Eucharist is, and what the proper names and uses are for the things they will see during the service. Children participating in the class will receive First Communion at the 9am Easter service.
Vacation Bible School. VBS is a week long, fun-filled adventure for children 3 years through 5 grade. VBS takes place in June on a Monday through Friday from 9am to 12 pm. Each year a theme is selected that will help introduce and/or strengthen a concept of Christian life. Children participate in art, music, classroom instruction, snack time, free play, and a very engaging chapel time. At the end of the week, we have a party where the children will perform the songs they have learned and then enjoy some cake and fellowship. Each child goes home with the fun crafts they have been working on all week including a T-shirt they helped create.
Parenting and Marriage Enrichment. Visionary Parenting. God has a grand vision for the Christian family. In this 7 part series, parents will learn how vital their role is in the spiritual formation of their children. Dr. Rob Reinow has created this course to show parents what the Bible says about parenting and how to create a God-centered home. The Marriage Course. This 5 week program, from the creators of the Alpha Course, helps married couples discuss different aspects of their married life in a constructive, non-threatening manner. Each evening session consists of a dinner, video and private discussion of the workbook topics. Couples will take from the course many valuable insights and tools to make the most of their relationship.
Wednesday Bible Study. Wednesday nights at St. John's begin with a healing service at 6pm followed by a potluck supper at 6:30pm then Bible Study from 7-8pm. Childcare is provided from 6:30-8pm. Participation in any or all of these events is welcomed. The studies are led by Fr. David Klein who teaches on a selected book of the Bible, but leads participants throughout the Bible to find passages that relate to theme of the study text. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the selected book, but also of how the Bible unfolds as a single document.
Sunday Morning Adult Formation. Sunday morning at 10:15 am.
